Mission: Impossible 6 Director Responds to Justice League Reshoot Blame

Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has addressed the efforts made to accommodate the Justice League reshoots during filming. By now movie fans will be familiar with the messy history of 2017’s Justice League, where original director Zack Snyder stepped away during production and Joss Whedon was brought on to oversee extensive reshoots and editing. Warner Bros. ran into an immediate problem with Henry Cavill, who was also filming Mission: Impossible – Fallout when the reshoots were taking place.

The actor had grown a mustache for his role in Fallout, but Paramount was unwilling to let him shave for the Justice League reshoots. This forced the studio to remove Cavill’s facial hair digitally, which in the final product gave the actor’s upper lip a distinctly unnatural appearance. The mustache controversy became a talking point around the movie, and the number of shots where Cavill appears with an unnatural looking mouth served to highlight how many of Superman’s scenes had been reshot.

The forthcoming release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout was bound to drag up the mustache debacle once again. Some fans asked at the time why it wasn’t possible to let Cavill shave for Justice League and don fake facial hair for Fallout, but the actor himself stated this wasn’t an option. Now Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has addressed the controversy on his Twitter account.

Given the amount of stunt work and action Cavill’s character is said to go through in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, apparently shaving just wouldn’t have worked. It just seems to have come down to a case of bad timing; Justice League’s release date meant the reshoots couldn’t wait, so the studio was forced to press ahead. Cavill has since shaved off the offending hair, and now seems wryly amused by all the hassle it caused, while McQuarrie appears to be steeling himself for the numerous Justice League questions ahead.

Hopefully, the obsession over Cavill’s facial hair won’t dominate discussion of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which is looking like another solid entry in the long-running series. McQuarrie also directed previous entry Rogue Nation, and his return makes him the first director in the franchise to helm more than one entry. Meanwhile, talk of Zack Snyder’s fabled cut of Justice League continues, with a new rumor suggesting the director is assembling his version of the movie and is close to announcing its existence with a trailer. Whether or not Warner Bros. would allow him to release it is another thing since he would definitely need their permission.
