Henry Cavill Would Love to Work With Tom Cruise in a DC Movie

Henry Cavill says he would love to work with Tom Cruise on a DC movie down the line. The actor, who shares the screen with Cruise during this week's Mission: Impossible - Fallout, has further emphasized that he would be game to reunite with his costar on any project, and not just DC-related.

Cavill played Superman in Zack Snyder's DC movies Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, yet his future in the DC Films universe - or Worlds of DC franchise - remains up in the air. There's been much in the way of rumor mongering about Cavill returning as Superman in another solo movie (aka. Man of Steel 2) or making an appearance in an upcoming DC film like Shazam!, but nothing official just yet. Similarly, it's been reported in the past that Cruise was being eyed to play Hal Jordan in DC's Green Lantern Corps movie, and may still be on the company's radar for the role. If so, that could pave the way to a Cruise/Cavill reunion.

Screen Rant asked Cavill about Cavill about Man of Steel 2 at the Mission: Impossible - Fallout press junket in Paris earlier this month. The actor, in what has become his go-to joke now, said he expects to star in another Superman movie "somewhere in between 2019 to 2045", but didn't have anything news to offer beyond that. However, when asked about the Cruise/Green Lantern rumors, Cavill indicated he would be more than happy to play the Man of Steel opposite Cruise as Hal Jordan (or any DC character) in a film:

I would love to work with Tom again. So, any opportunity I get would be enormous fun.

Interestingly enough, even Cruise seems to have come around to the idea of playing a character in the DC Films universe of late. For the longest time, the Mission: Impossible franchise star seemed uninterested in superhero films and often indicated that he would prefer to keep playing comparatively grounded roles in other types of genre fare (see Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow, for recent examples). However, back in May, Cruise said he would be up for joining a DC movie if "I feel like I can contribute something" and entertain audiences with his efforts.

Now that former DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns has taken over writing the Green Lantern Corps movie, it's not clear yet if someone like Cruise is still the kind of actor that's being looked at to potentially play Hal Jordan. Similarly, even if Cruise were to be cast in any DC film, there's no guarantee he and Cavill as Superman would get to share a scene. Nevertheless, the duo play well off one another in Mission: Impossible - Fallout and it would be interesting to see how their screen chemistry translates over to a different kind of genre movie, superhero or otherwise.
