PHCB 2017: Poor sanitation facilities in Thimphu, Samtse and Chhukha - BBS

Kinley Dem, Thimphu Jul 3, 2018

According to the 2017 population and housing census of Bhutan, Thimphu, Samtse and Chhukha have the highest number of households using improper toilets.

Thimphu, Samtse and Chhukha Dzongkhags have more than 4,000 households each without access to improved sanitation facilities while Haa, Lhuentse and Gasa dzongkhags have less than 1,000 households each.

However, around 78 per cent of households have improved toilet facilities that are either a flush toilet, ventilated improved pit, pit latrine with slab and composting toilet.

The PHCB report also shows that at least two per cent of households or more than 3,000 households in the country do not have a toilet facility.

However, the number of households without a toilet facility is a huge drop from more than 12 thousand households in 2005. This scenario is more prominent in rural areas with 3 per cent than in urban areas with less than one per cent.
